Society Let me tell you how that happened, Six months and four days after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor David Allen Schwartzkopf. DAS was born He arrived in a small farm house to his mother and a neighbor lady his father was. trout fishing and a doctor had not been contacted The house was 20 miles west of Shawano. Wisconsin on highway 29 Today 29 is a divided highway which crosses Wisconsin but back then it. was a gravel road It took extra time to cut the umbilical cord because string to tie the cord off was. not readily available String from a bag of sugar was eventually used. At 14 months of age DAS had Scarlet fever and German measles which took away his ability. to walk and talk until he was 3 years old When his father returned from the Army in WW II a farm. near Bowler WI was bought It didn t have electricity or running water. At 9 years old it was determined DAS had Cerebral Palsy and received speech and physical. therapy as an outpatient from the University of Wisconsin Hospital. For 7th grade DAS was placed with a small group of mentally retarded children And for 8th. grade he attended a one room country school 4 kids in 8th grade They were given a test to get. ready for high school DAS could still see good enough to mark the answer sheet but not good. enough to read the questions and too proud to have them read to him He started high school with. an IQ of 88, The teacher who taught algebra didn t believe DAS was mentally retarded The school hired. an upperclassman daily to bring him up to being a sophomore in high school He attended 5 schools. by the time he graduated and graduated as a member of The National Honor Society. In 2010 the class had their 50 year graduation reunion DAS learned from a teacher that in. 1957 when he was a sophomore the person that they hired to accurately measure his IQ could only. bring it in at a maximum of 140 but I was told it was higher than that I am 70 years old and the body. is slowing down but the mind is still good I had brain surgery 2 weeks ago for fluid on my brain and. after it was over the surgeon said he very much liked my brain Now I feel like it s back to the way it. was 40 years ago, Thank you for the newsletter and have great holidays.
